The School Year Abroad college counseling program follows the established content and calendar of some of the most competitive high schools in the United States. Each SYA school has an on-site college counselor who works with the students’ home schools to guide students through the college process.
High school seniors will meet with college counselors on a regular basis for help with standardized test registration, and all matters concerning college applications: from essay writing, to obtaining teacher recommendations, to grade reports. The college counselor oversees the early and regular application process and sends the Mid-Year Report and any recommendations requested directly to the colleges.
For high school juniors, college counselors will provide preliminary counseling as students begin to think about college applications, help them register for standardized tests such as the PSATs and SATs, and work with them to form preliminary college lists.
With all colleges accepting online applications, the college application process has become no more difficult for students at SYA’s schools than if they were in the United States. College counselors keep in regular communication with each student’s home school college counselor, forwarding all grades, testing, and reports.
